The topics are relevant if your child is starting Primary 1 in 2011; especially if you would like to pick up tips on how to help your child ease into the primary school environment.

Update ~ Mr Kiran – Dance Fest 2010 - Next PSG Meeting

Many of us would have already read from Mr Kiran’s email to all Xishan PSG Members sometime in mid-Oct about his new posting to another school at the end of 2010. [Rotating of principals after a 6 to7 years of tenure is part of the MOE’s policy.] If you have not read the email, a copy has been put up earlier.

At the P6 Dance Fest 2010 on 19th Nov 2010, in appreciation of his contribution to Xishan Primary School in the 7 years he has been principal, the event committee put up a slide presentation and presented a gift for the departing Mr. Kiran.

In his speech, Mr Kiran thanked the Teachers and the Parents to have journeyed with him, “without them I would not have achieved so much.” He also mentioned about the “excellent support” that the PSG has given to the school ~ PSG who have been eager to do things for the school.

The PSG on behalf of all parents of Xishanites, would like to thank Mr Kiran for his support given to the PSG. Given our very limited pool of resources, Mr Kiran has always been very appreciative and encouraging towards participation from the PSG in the various school activities.

We would also like to wish Mr. Kiran ALL THE BEST in his new posting!

PSG & Dance Fest
Speaking of the Dance Fest 2010, all at the school were treated to dance items put together by the graduating P6-ers.

What is PSG’s involvement?

To quote from the Teacher-IC, Miss Kong, in her Thank-you email:

“... appreciation to ...”
“The PSG members for helping to make and/or create the costumes for the pupils, and being the make-up artists for the pupils on the actual day.....”
“The success of the Dance Fest 2010 wouldn't be possible, if without your help.”

Just to go a-little-off the point from Dance Fest, the PSG gets Thank-you notes all the time from the Teachers in the school, - sometimes in the form of emails, other time SMS-es and very often verbal “Thank You”! – Whenever we participated in any events. Wanted to mention this, just so to make sure that all parents who have participated in the school events and activities to know that you are being appreciated for your time and effort. Always!

Posting and Change of Principalship for 2011

Dear Parents and PSG members,

The Ministry of Education has a policy of rotating Principals after a period of 6- 7 years tenure at a school. I have been recently informed that at the end of this year, Xishan will be having a new Principal posted in and I shall be posted to Sembawang Primary School with effect from 15 December 2010.

It has been a challenging yet enriching 7 years that I have had in Xishan and we as a community have grown to effect many changes both in structure and programmes to benefit our children in Xishan. The school environment is never complete with the support of the PSG and its members and I would like thank you all for your support in the last few years for the school programmes and working closely with our staff members in establishing a strong and collaborative school-parents community in Xishan.

I am confident that you will continue to grow and support the school under the leadership of the new Principal and do wish you all the best in your future endeavours with the school for our Xishanites.

Reading is a big topic with parents nowadays.

Some of us, might have started reading to our little babies before they could do the kick while still residing in the mummies wombs. Kiasu as it may sound, we simply should not ignore the importance of reading.

However, reading is a habit that needs to be nurtured and it takes the Daddy and Mummy a great deal of effort and time to mould a child into a book-loving one.

If you are a parent who would like some tips:

To get your child to read;
To get your child to read beyond those books on the bestselling list;
To rekindle your own interest in reading [bearing in mind that parents are the best role models for our own children]

The Xishan-SFE has invited Mrs Aow Meow Kiang who "is especially keen to help parents nurture a love of reading in their children" to share with us this session "Reading Together".

When: This Sat, on 18th Sep 2010 from 10am to 12 noon

Where: Xishan Primary School, Admin Block, (either the AVA Room L4 or the Library L2)

Fee $: It is "FREE" for parents. With thanks to the Xishan-SFE!

PSG In Action II ~ Racial Harmony Day

For Racial Harmony Day, the PSG held a sharing session on "Rojak Making" with the P4 children.

The preparation work before each session ~ putting up the cleaned utencils and apportioned ingredients ready for the children working in groups of 4.

The session began with introduction to the 'what' that goes into the rojak making.

Demonstrating the ingredients in their "raw and pre-prepared" form.

We were totally amused by the children's replies wheneven Mdm Sakdiah-kakak asked them for the name of THIS item in her hand.

Answers from the different sessions had been mostly: Potato!

Sharing the smell of ginger bud which gives the fragrance to the rojak. Since so little is used, there is not be much usually to be seen when it is mixed with rest of the ingredients.

Nothing beats a hands-on session for the children with some help from the PSG Members.

After some twirling and swirling of the ingredients in the sauce, the children tasted the finished product.

Other than these activities posted here with pictures, there are a lot that has taken place. Too bad that we do not always have pictures to show for each and every event.

For example, during the International Friendship Day, PSG Members also came together to prepare food for the children to sample. There were the Thai-styled papaya salad; Malay-styled Black Glutinous and the Filipino-styled Chicken Macaroni, Sopas.

There were pre-preparation work of planning and marketing etc. On the day itself, the PSG Members gathered at 6 plus 7 in the morning to make sure that the food is ready for the children during their recess. These dedicated PSG Members derived loads of satisfaction from the cooking to seeing how much the children had enjoyed yumming down the food.

PSG In Action I ~ Xishan Open House

During the Xishan Open House on 20th Jul 2010, the Xishan-PSG, with collaboration from the school teachers, put up stalls for food demonstration for Muah Chee, Teh Tarik and Roti Kirai.

PSG members gamely took on questions from our teachers to prep them for questions that might come from the genuine food samplers.

On the same day, we also had Beth, Cecilia and Ella helping out with hair do for the Malay Cultural Dance Group.

Timing will be from about 2pm -6pm.

Other than the earlier posts for Learning Journeys happening in Mar 2010 requiring the involvement of PSG Members, here’s a snapshot of more activities and events. Some of which already have a place on the calendar, while the rest need to be confirmed at a later date.

Two things that we hope PSG Members would do:
1. If you are a working parent, and would like to participate in any of the event, mark your calendar and put in that leave application early. Even if it is just for that ½ a day involvement with Learning Journey, it makes a difference to our children.
2. Come by this blog often to be updated

I am definitely signing up to be power-charged! The six weeks of school holidays has me shouting a lot more than before and I really could do with some reminders and more pointers to be more nurturing indeed.

Pillars of Encouragement

The new school year has started yet again. It had seemed not too long ago that my children were shouting “Yeah. No school!”

I took time from work to bring the children to school on the first two days. While I was at the school, the artwork paintings around the school canteen caught my attention.

I really don't think my handphone camera did justice to this painting. If you were to walk pass the painting, it would have this brightening up your eyes (and maybe your minds too) effect. This is found next to the HOM corners near the school bookshop.

As I found out later, there is this work in progress to fill the walls of the school with “art”. I have sub-zero artistic inclination. My drawings now, if you would called them drawings at all, are still limited to stick-man. So I watched in awe as the artist painstakingly filled in the colours.

It sure takes a lot of patience and concentration to transform the pillar.

Looking at this transformed pillar, does it make you want to reach out for the stars?

The words on both sides of the pillar reminded us that there are always two sides to a coin. We can "always stay positive and keep going forward' or falter and choose to give up when the going gets tough.

The rest of the pillars in the canteen are filled with similarly themed artwork.

This pillar is my favourite:

There is the four-step metamorphosis process which a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly: egg ~ larva (caterpillar) ~ pupa ~ butterfly. It is not just a matter of flipping to the other side of the pillar for the caterpillar to be called a butterfly. Caterpillar goes through a major transformation to be called a butterfly.

All the caterpillar does is eat and grow. As it moves into the pupa stage, big changes take place - it is where the beautiful parts of the butterfly develop. When it is fully developed, it has to strain and struggle really hard to break out from the chrysalis, open out the wings to take its first flight.

This process does remind us of our own lives doesn't it?

As our children take on new challenges in the new year with new classmates, new teachers, improved academic results, victories for sports events and CCA and oh, our school in single session, let us parents put "our human voices" to these pillars of encouragement to motivate them so that they too will want to be in their best.

Like we always say and believe, their best is yet to be!

These pilars of encouragemen are located strategically in the canteen; really hard to miss.

Hi Dads,
‘Back to School with Dad 2010’ initiative strives to promote Father-Child bonding and aims to encourage families to be active together.

The first 50 Father-Child team who walks to school during the first week when school reopens will receive a goodie bag from F&N Alive.

Fathers can also participate in this contest by taking a photograph of you walking your children to school. You can then submit your photograph via email to: cats6 @ sph.com.sg and stand to win $100 sporting gift vouchers.

1.P4 SONG Fest
Time : 2 - 4 pm
When: Training Dates - 11 Nov (Wed), 12 Nov (Thurs), 13 Nov (Fri), 16 Nov (Mon)
Performance Date - 17 Nov (Tues)
Where: Level 4 Classrooms ( C4-01 to C4-06)
Who: All P4 pupils & Orchid Park Choir Group
Tr in-charge: Mrs Gina Lim & P4 Music Trs (follow up during curriculum)

2.P5 STOMP Fest
Dates: Mon 16 Nov - Thurs 19 Nov
Time : 2 - 4 pm
Venue : Level 5, P5 Classrooms

What to do:
1. Gather and assemble pupils at void deck
2. Class monitors to lead pupils to class for the training
3. Assist Tr-in-charge in overseeing the training
4. Walk along the level to maintain discipline and also see to disciplinary issues that may arise
5. If neccessary, assist student leaders from secondary schools in the training or in maintaining
discipline
6. Make sure all pupils are on task
7. Check that all classes are in order before dismissing them

Awwwww! Isn't that just so nice to hear!

Immediately all the nervousness left me and I felt so at ease with them.

Never underestimate the power of kind words.

I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to remember faces and get into BIG trouble should anyone of these angels go MIA - so I got them together for a group picture. Some resistance initially, but they warmed up to the camera pretty quickly.

2 pictures from the "I am so hot!" series! At the holding area at Yishun MRT station. It was hot; not so much the heat but more of the humidity that is making us so tired and so hot.

A "dedicated" train took us from Yishun MRT to Raffles Place MRT. It was "dedicated" for the NE show with 4 or 5 other schools hopping onto the train from the different stations along the NE line. Of course, there were not enough seats for all of us but the children were just as happy sitting on the floor. How cool is this - sitting on the floor of the cars of the MRT, by order from the authorities.

My interest with NDP has weaned since it moved out from National Stadium to this Floating Platform. I found it increasingly a challenge sitting through the NDP show at home in the recent years; even then if I had sat through the NDP show, I no longer have that "I want to be there at the Stadium" feeling which I did every year when I watched the parade at home. Perhaps I had been biased, due to my past participation in the NDP through SSA at the National Stadium many many years ago. I just felt more connected with National Stadium. That "feeling of been overwhelmed with love for Singapore" that comes with watching the parade held at the National Stadium was just so wonderful.

However, as I sat through this NE Show last Saturday, I think I am feeling IT again. Even the theme song that didn't sound good when it was played on TV sounded cool; although I am still unable to sing along to it as yet.

I am so looking forward to the actual show on 9th August 2009!

International Friendship Day 2009

Dear PSG parents,

Myself, Mr Addy and Ms Farina are getting our CCA groups together to create pail covers from cloth that is recycled. We need 150 pail covers and pupils need help in sewing the pail covers.

I know this is a bit of a rush, but i need parents who can come in and help us to sew the covers and guide the pupils who are sewing, during CCA time.You can also come out of CCA time to help out. Mdm Kamisa and Mdm Catherine, pls help to manage. Thanks a lot.

Below are the details,
-10(max) parents who can help to sew.

- Parent can come, Wed morning 15/4 or 22/4 (work together with pupils) from 8:00 to 9:00 am or Anytime from 15/4 to 22/4 (help to sew on your own time or you can bring home and help to sew and return it before 22/4) in the Teachers Resource Room.(pail covers will be placed in a box.)

-Rubber string, needle , thread, scissors and sample pail covers are provided. So we need parents to help tidy up, teach and guide pupils in their sewing.

Pls give your names to Mdm Kamisa or Mdm Catherine if you are interested.

3M Programme

Dear parents,

This year, Xishan Pri will be partnering with Mendaki in their 3M programme. It is a 6 session parent-child math workshop for primary 1 to 2 parents. As such, we need you to volunteer your services for 6 consecutive Saturdays from 9 am to 12 pm, starting from 28 Mar 09.

Job specs:
In charge of the registration booth and issuing of handouts.
Understand Malay and able to translate in English.
Help out in facilitating discussions.

We are hoping that we can get at least 4 to 5 parents per week. Do email me if you are interested.

Duration : 3h (9am to 12pm)
